Unicom Graduate Management Programme
Unicom believes that in order to remain at the forefront of a challenging and
dynamic industry, continual growth and improvement is required. For
this purpose, Unicom has developed a Graduate Management Programme open to graduates
from any educational background.
The programme was implemented to fast-track a new wave of enthusiastic and energetic
managers, to drive innovation, and to bring a fresh outlook to the
company. Only by promoting excellence can Unicom develop new and exciting products
and services for our customers, whilst continuing to focus on exceptional customer
service.
Your journey through Unicom
The Graduate Management Programme has been designed to allow the graduates to
gain an unrivalled understanding of the company. The 12-month scheme
consists of rotational placements within the various departments of Unicom, providing
you with the opportunity to show off your talents and abilities. You will be given
regular training and guidance to continually aid your development
to help you become the best manager possible.
To ensure you have comprehensive knowledge of company practices and procedures you
will be rotated between the following departments:
By working in each department you will gain first hand experience of the inner workings
of a successful telecommunications company. You will experience the various management
styles used in each department whilst also receiving specific management training
to prepare you for your future role in the company.
Your impact on Unicom
Throughout the Graduate Management Programme, you will have regular meetings to
review your development and integration within the company. During these meetings
you will discuss the department you are currently working in, reporting on how that
department could be improved.
During each meeting you will be assigned a project to be completed during your next
rotation. The projects completed by previous intakes have been of an exceptional
standard and have been presented to the senior management (including Directors of
the company) for consideration. They have helped to influence change within the
company which is a major accomplishment for someone new to the business.
Each project scope is different and will challenge you to develop new skills.
Previous projects have included:
- Reporting on how to streamline and improve a department
- Marketing strategies for the services we offer
- Improving the performance and motivation of a team
- Planning and executing a charity fundraising event
- Writing press releases to gain publicity for the company
- Proposing a logistics plan of how best to utilise a storage building
Some projects require you to work as a team with your fellow graduates; some project require
you to work individually, sometimes in competition with other graduates. All projects submitted
receive feedback from senior management and many projects have a real world impact (e.g.
fund raising for Children in Need).

The Graduate Management Programme has been designed to challenge you and provide you with
the opportunity to develop in many different areas. As well as a detailed knowledge of
the telecommunications industry you will gain:
- Management Skills
- Communication Skills
- Call Handling Skills
- Time Management Skills
|
- Interpersonal Skills
- Delegation
- Self-Assurance
- Assertiveness
|
At the end of the Graduate Management Programme you will be provided with a high-level

FAQs
There is an initial 12 month period, structured for you to gain experience in various
departments of the company.
You will not spend time in every department of Unicom as the programme is focussed
on developing you for a management position.
Unicom are very interested in having a diverse and varied workforce. If you have
(or are expecting to receive) a 2:1 degree in any subject, then we will be interested
in hearing from you. Previous members of the GMP scheme have studied: Accountancy
& Finance; History & Philosophy; English; and Geology.
Whilst Unicom has many sales offices around the UK, the graduate programme is based
solely at our Manchester based head office.
Unicom believe in rewarding commitment and success. As well as a competitive wage
you will be included in the company Personal Incentive Bonus Scheme, a performance
related bonus paid every 3 months.
In addition to your salary and the PIBS, we also regularly run seasonal incentive
schemes which act as a competition between randomly picked teams. Previous prizes
have included Plasma TV’s, holidays, and cash rewards.
The previous graduate intakes are available for help and guidance if needed. Unicom
prides itself on developing great working relationships between employees. Supervisors,
Managers, and even Directors of the company are always available to answer any questions
and to offer assistance.
Throughout the scheme you will be asked to create reports and presentations based
on your current placement. This is done to examine your time management skills,
examine your understanding of the department you are in, and give you the chance
to air your views and suggestions about how to improve the company.
You will also work as part of a team on a group project. You will either work with,
or be pitted against, other members (past or present) of the graduate programme
on projects ranging from redesigning the company intranet, to proposing a marketing
strategy for a new product.
Testimonials
Unicom has had great success with previous graduate intakes. Below are a few comments
from previous graduates on their views of the scheme:
"For me the most challenging part of the scheme has been the monthly projects we are tasked with.
Over time these have really progressed my skill set and enabled me to gain recognition at a senior
level across the company. Despite being a little apprehensive at first, I have really enjoyed
being pushed outside my comfort zone; each project has been ideally designed to aid personal
and professional development."
Holly Almond
"The programme has been ideal for me as a recent graduate, affording me the opportunity
to gain invaluable experience across a whole range of departments. There is a fantastic
support structure in place to help you grow into the role, whilst the projects I’ve embarked
upon as part of the scheme have been great for my personal development – allowing me to
take on real responsibility in tackling varied challenges throughout the company."
Chris Mullan
"I have found Unicom's Graduate Scheme to be competitive, skill-refining and ultimately rewarding.
Working across the different departments has allowed me to develop numerous skills, including
negotiation, time-management and problem resolution skills."
"The people I have worked with across the differing departments are second to none, which
has made my experience thus far all the more satisfying. Furthermore, the chance to
interact with senior management and company directors on a regular basis has helped me
to grow as a professional."
